Candace Hamel, OD

Dr. Candace Hamel has been changing the way people see for the past 30 years.

Both in her private small-town practice and as a clinical instructor at Pacific University’s Portland clinic, Dr. Hamel stays abreast of new techniques in vision care.

And while she provides eye care to people of all ages in her Estacada office, Dr. Hamel also focuses on children. Because early intervention is key to a lifetime of healthy vision, she encourages patients to make sure every child receives an eye exam before entering kindergarten.

“It is best to catch things early," says Hamel, a graduate of University of Berkeley and a member of the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association. “Then it’s much easier to correct."

Left undiagnosed, a child with untreated eye problems can suffer serious vision loss or blindness. That’s why Dr. Hamel says it is crucial for parents to understand the importance of early screenings.

"Even if you’re helping one or two children, it’s worth it," Hamel says. “It is such a major part of their lives."
